ICMR Stroke Study Workshop

The State Health Systems Resource Centre (SHSRC), Kerala, in collaboration with the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology (SCTIMST), conducted a two-day training programme on 19th and 20th November as part of the ICMR implementation research project titled “Upscaling of Primary Stroke Care Units in Kerala to Certified Stroke Care Centres.”

The primary objective of the training was to strengthen stroke care services and improve the quality of healthcare delivery for stroke patients across the state The programme covered a wide range of critical topics, including diagnosing acute stroke in the emergency department, imaging in acute stroke, selection of patients for thrombolysis, etiological evaluation of stroke, secondary prevention of stroke, management of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and neurological monitoring in a stroke unit. Special emphasis was given to the nursing role in emergency stroke management, thrombolysis, NIHSS training, dysphagia screening, prevention of aspiration, and post-stroke discharge planning. Each session was complemented by group discussions and interactive question-and-answer segments to enhance practical understanding and engagement.

Chief Medical Officers and Staff Nurses from the participating medical institutions involved in the research study attended the workshop.

The training sessions were facilitated by Dr. V. Jithesh SHSRC-Kerala Executive Director,Dr Poornima Nair, Consultant SK Hospital, Dr Dileep Ramachandran Associate Professor, dept of neurology, Trivandrum Medical Collage, Dr Jeethu T.J, fellow in SCTIMST took the training sessions along with the nursing officers from SCTIMST. The program was coordinated by the SHSRC- Kerala ICMR research team, led by project scientist. Dr. Ajay S Babu with Project Nurse members Sreeja Pavithran, Saviar M T and Ashwani Mohan.
